Final Observation

Lesson Topic: Writing 5-complete sentences (paragraph)                                       Date: 7/21/25

Taught: How to generate ideas for writing, how to organize ideas for writing to a prompt, how to write a 5-sentence paragraph to a prompt

What went well: I started the lesson off with a picture of many different types of favorite foods. The students loved looking at all the pictures of foods and pointing out which ones they liked. We had a discussion about our favorite foods. We talked about reasons why these foods were our favorites. I introduced the purpose of the lesson and the students understood the objective to write 5 complete sentences to the writing prompt. We talked about how this was an opinion piece and what made it such. We then picked 8 favorite foods to narrow down ideas, on a bubble map. I modeled how to organized ideas into the "My Favorite Food" graphic organizer. The students did well with organizing their thoughts into their "My Favorite Food" graphic organizers.

What did not go as planned: I wanted to get the students thinking about why these foods were their favorite. I tried making a list of descriptive words that they could use in their writing to back up their opinions. Although I talked about what this last was, I should have given it a title like "Descriptive Words". The children did contribute words to the list after I gave them many suggestions. The students did well with identifying their topic sentences on their graphic organizers. They begun to develop detail sentences to support their opinion. We did not get to the writing or editing portion of the lesson today. I thought we would have enough time but did not.

How to change for subsequent lessons: I could have had a title for the descriptive word section of the lesson. I could have gone back to the pictures and asked the children to imagine how their favorite foods tasted and smelt to get them to suggest more words. I think we will do this quickly tomorrow, it will also serve as a way for them to transition into our writing block. They did not finish their graphic organizers so I do not think this will mess up their writing of ideas. I could have planned for this lesson to take two days instead of just one.

Comments

  1. It was a fun lesson and the students were engaged. Sometimes it is hard to figure out the timing for a lesson but you will know more if you ever have to teach this again.

  2. Amy this sounds like it was a great lesson! I really like how you guided your students through the process. Showing them food to engage them and open the lesson is a fantastic idea! I agree that timing can sometimes be difficult. Especially with students you haven't known for too long. I still find myself overplanning sometimes, but you learn from it, and that is what matters.
